WaterAid is an international NGO focused exclusively on ensuring equitable access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education for the world’s poorest communities. Formed in 1981, we have been working in water, sanitation and hygiene for over 30 years. To date we have reached 27 million people with clean water and 27 million people with improved sanitation. Our approach combines service delivery and advocacy. In our service delivery we work with local partners, who understand local issues. We provide them with the skills and support to help communities set up and manage practical and sustainable projects that meet their real needs. In our advocacy programmes we work locally, internationally and globally to change policy and practice, ensuring that water, hygiene and sanitation's vital role in reducing poverty is recognised.

We work with partners to maximise our impact, including donor and national governments, international institutions, corporates and philanthropists, as well as global and local NGO peer organisations. We are actively looking for new partnerships.

We work in 28 countries across sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Central America. Projects are managed by Country Programmes operating in a particular nation– eg WaterAid India, WaterAid Bangladesh etc. River Basins are trans-boundary. This means more than one WaterAid Country Programme may be working in or near a River Basin as listed on the Water Action Hub. Our Country Programmes can have scores of live ongoing projects operational at any one time. For this reason we have not detailed individual projects in each country / river basin but have instead given an outline of the type of work undertaken by each Country Programme. To find out more about our work in a particular Country Programme please get in touch using the contact details listed.
