WaterAid is an international NGO focused exclusively on ensuring equitable access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education (WASH) for the world’s poorest communities. Formed in 1981 we have been working in water, sanitation and hygiene for over 30 years. To date we have reached 17.5 million people with safe water and 12.9 million people with improved sanitation. WaterAid works in 27 countries globally, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Central America. Each country operates a national WaterAid Country Programme. These are supported by our offices in the UK, USA, Sweden and Australia. WaterAid has been working in Rwanda since 2009. WaterAid Rwanda is a pilot programme headquartered in Kigali. Since forming WaterAid Rwanda has reached 15,000 people with safe water and just under 2,000 people with sanitation. As a post-conflict country, there is a real need and demand for water and sanitation services in Rwanda as much of the water and sanitation infrastructure was destroyed during the 1994 genocide. Broadly speaking our work in Rwanda focus on: 1) Rural and Urban WASH - access to safe drinkable water supply, improved sanitation and hygiene promotion for underserved and marginalized communities in Bugesera district. 2) Improve district coordination - performance monitoring and use of resources for more equitable and sustainable WASH services to communities in Bugesera by the government and private sector 3) Strengthen sector coordination - enhance capacity to monitor performance and track progress in water, sanitation and hygiene services. 4) Prioritisation of WASH in national development, education and preventative health sectors at national and district levels. WaterAid Rwanda manage four projects in Bugesera district. As a pilot programme WaterAid Rwanda is not currently looking for new partners.
