The Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) is a partnership of some of the world’s leaders in sustainable water resource management, bringing together businesses, multilateral agencies, governments, civil society and communities to drive consensus-based actions on shared water risk. At the core of AWS lies applied knowledge of water stewardship. AWS employs three reinforcing programs to drive improved water stewardship: a standard and verification system, membership, and training. Each of these programs provides benefits and work together to build capacity to address our shared water challenges. At the heart of AWS is the stakeholder-endorsed International Water Stewardship Standard. The AWS Standard drives improved water stewardship, defined as “the use of water that is socially equitable, environmentally sustainable and economically beneficial, achieved through a stakeholder-inclusive process that involves site- and catchment-based actions”. Cutting through the Standard are four overarching outcomes: good water governance; sustainable water balance; good water quality, and; healthy status of important water-related areas. The Standard outlines a series of steps, criteria and indicators for site-level water management and catchment-level water stewardship. Business and water service providers who are compliant with the Standard will be recognized for their performance. In addition, the Standard helps to align catchment strategies and policies with existing tools and best management practices and acts as a means to drive constructive relationships to ensure equitable and sustainable use of water. Currently, AWS’s board organizations are The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Water Stewardship Australia (WSA), the Pacific Institute (PI), WWF, Water Witness International, the Water Environment Federation (WEF), the European Water Partnership (EWP), the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), the UN Global Compact’s CEO Water Mandate, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
