TCCC and WWF implemented a sustainable agriculture demonstration project and a wetland restoration project in the Guangyuan Nanhe National Wetland Park. The objective was to demonstrate that sustainable agriculture practices reduce runoff and pollutant loading from agricultural lands and to protect downstream wetlands from further degradation and improve hydrology and water quality. The Jialing River Basin is also home to about 30 million residents. Its headwaters provide habitat for the Giant Panda and it has high aquatic biodiversity. The Guangyuan Nanhe National Wetland Park, located at the upper reach of the Jialiang River, plays an important role for local socio-economic development, yet it has been degraded due to excessive development for recreational purposes and upstream unsustainable farming activities. Longtan Town is located upstream of Guangyuan Nanhe National Wetland Park. Fruit production is an important component of Longtan Town's economy , yet contributes to surface water runoff and pollutant loading of the Jialing River. The first part of the project consists of Green Certification for Pears grown on 333.3 ha. The use of chemicals is strictly controlled and the certification will generate greater economic returns to producers. The second part of the project, focused on wetland restoration, includes 2 terrace wetlands created from abandoned rice paddies, 3 artificial lakes dredged and vegetated to increase groundwater recharge, and riparian habitat improvement. Finally, capacity building was conducted for park management staff.
