In Malawi, one of the world’s poorest countries, 86% of people in urban areas and 65% of people in rural areas have access to basic water sources. Access to basic sanitation facilities is much lower, with only 34% of urban and 25% of rural populations accessing these facilities. Water For People drills and repairs boreholes and rehabilitates gravity-fed piped water systems to expand water access. To ensure long-term sustainability of water services, community associations that manage water kiosks and water points are supported. Training these associations on topics like maintenance and repair and creating sustainable fees for water service also supports the service's sustainability. Water For People also established a mobile mechanics program to help provide timely repairs for water systems, a note of success being the country-wide replication of the program. Coverage of sanitation services is increasing through what’s known as a Community-Led Total Sanitation model. Encouraging community members to change their behavior and dangers of open defecation are shared which creates demand for better toilets. Because sanitation services utilize a market-based approach, supportive, healthy business environments are created for sanitation entrepreneurs. In schools, Water For People increases access to water and sanitation facilities and promotes good hygiene practices among students. To ensure girls can attend and stay in school once they get their periods, school facilities include areas that provide girls privacy during menstruation and incinerators to dispose of sanitary products.
