All over South Africa there are clear signs of improperly treated wastewater that enters our river systems and aquifers https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-04-26-south-africas-rivers-of-sewage-more-than-half-of-sas-treatment-works-are-failing/. The government itself has proclaimed that 56% of the 1150 wastewater treatment plants are in poor or critical condition. The situation is no different in the upper Breede Basin, where the Witzenberg Municipality has overburdened wastewater management systems in the three towns of Tulbagh, Ceres and Wolseley that need innovative solutions. On top of that, sewer blockages in residential areas lead to added overflow events and the rivers are often the recipients of litter. The total number of point and diffuse pollution sources have never been fully mapped. The above calls for an urgent river rehabilitation program to prevent further water quality deterioration in the river ecosystem. The Witzenberg Municipality is very keen to partner up in order to circumvent its budget limitations and to make the required research, interventions and upgrades possible. Specific focus would be given to solid waste removal from rivers, pinpointing of point and diffuse pollution sources, the construction of shitflow diagrams . improvement of the Waste Water Treatment Works by improving the grey infrastructure, as well as exploring the effectiveness of added green infrastructure (in the form of wetlands) below the treatment works.

Project Narrative

Focusing on water impact, ENGIE consumes or uses water for: cooling (thermal power plants) or heating (LNG terminals) systems, hydropower plants, demineralization, flues gas treatment, Industrial uses, district heating or cooling, etcÉ _ Each year the Group is updating its assessment of the water risk for the sites, by using the Aqueduct tool (World Resources Institute). Regarding the results concerning the probability of the Group being present in a watershed stressed area, we also analyze local risk and deploy action plans where it is necessary in collaboration with stakeholders.
