The hills of Murama and Ryabihira are located in the Rugari area of the commune and province of Muyinga.

The province of Muyinga located in the North-East of Burundi is classified among the regions under geographical depression where the altitude of its communes and hills is less than 1200 m, and which is characterized by a lack of fountains sources of drinking water. The populations of certain hills of this commune draw water from rivers and use it directly without any treatment. Lack of any other source of potable water; which is the notorious case of the hills of Murama and Ryabihira.

In its first phase, the project aims to serve the two hills of Murama and Ryabihira which are the most vulnerable, as their estimated population of more than 6,500 inhabitants drinks exclusively water drawn from the Ruvubu river or groundwater, without any other alternative. To access any other source; while households in other hills of the same commune have the possibility of obtaining drinking water at a distance of more than 5 km, either at the border with Tanzania or elsewhere.

The overall objective of the project is therefore focused on improving access to drinking water services, with expected results, in particular, the supply of drinking water to more than 90% of households in these two hills, and the fight against pandemic cases, in particular cholera. , which threatens the project area of action.
