Riverside County Regional Park & Open-Space District and HANA Resources Inc. are seeking funding for the Hidden Valley Wildlife Area Restoration Project in Riverside, California. The project will enhance 130 acres of riparian habitat and manage invasive plants on 1,198 acres. The project scope includes permitting, completion of the restoration plan, invasive plant maintenance, riparian enhancement (130 acres of excavator installed cuttings at 6-8 foot depth and 25 foot spacing), plant and animal species surveys, monitoring, and GIS/aerial imagery. The proposed project area managed by the Parks District and owned by the State of California (CDFW) and the Parks District. The project will leverage, build on, and compliment other regional conservation efforts to help the region meet federal, state, and local goals and objectives for our fish and wildlife. The project area is a high priority for restoration because of its large size, history of invasive giant reed management, and value for wildlife and recreation. The project will benefit and improve habitat for the special-status species that inhabit or potentially could inhabit the project area, including burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia), coastal California gnatcatcher (Polioptila californica californica), least Bell's vireo (Vireo bellii pusillus), Santa Ana River woollystar (Eriastrum densifolium subsp. sanctorum), and western yellow-billed cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus occidentalis). The project area serves a vital role within this urbanized landscape, providing the numerous recreation activities for the community including wildlife viewing, hunting, fishing, equestrian, hiking, biking, running, nature camps, and school and scout programs.
