This pilot project between Coca-Cola and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) addresses the need for pollution mitigation as well as aquaculture development in Lake Wuliangsu. These two needs arise because wastewater from the City of Bayan Nur is discharged into Lake Wuliangsu and the remote, rural area of Western China where the lake is located has relatively low living standards and economic conditions. A pilot aquaculture pond with an area of 200 Mu (i.e., 13 ha) was constructed as a wetland treatment system to improve water quality in Lake Wuliangsu, protect the ecosystem, and facilitate aquaculture development.
