Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company Armenia is partnering with the USAID since 2016 on ASPIRED project, an irrigation system rehabilitation project in Hayanist Village in Ararat province, including more efficient groundwater use for local farmers and affordable irrigation services.

Hayanist is the first community to practice irrigation system based on the secondary use of the nearby fish-farm’s outlet water. The entire irrigation network has been built anew for this project, including design of the network, laying of piping, construction of the pumping station at the outlet point of the fish-arm, installation of valve chambers, etc.

Project Results

  • 370 people benefited and farmers were able to cultivate 40 hectares of land that had been idle
  • Quantity of water saved is 1.1 million m3 annually, i.e cumulative 3.3mln m3 for the 3 years since the project started
  • Production of approximately 21 tons of fruits, vegetables, and grains grown using recycled water from fish farms
  • Water quality improvement: the analysis of the water showed that the quality of the water from the fish farm meets the requirements set up by FAO for the irrigation water.
  • Other benefitse: electricity saved per annum – 24’000 kWh i.e72’000kWh since the operation of the system, farmlands returned to cultivation in hectares – 40; and amount of CO2 emissions avoided (in metric tons) annually– 161, i.e. 483 since the operation of the project.”
