In 2020, the SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme assisted the Somali Ministry of Energy and Water Resources in organizing two seminars aimed at raising awareness and capacity among key stakeholders on critical water-related issues as a basis for gaining political commitment to shaping Somalia’s ability to manage water resources in a sustainable and productive manner. The seminars were organized under the Stage 3 framework of the Support Programme. The assistance of the Support Programme was strategically planned, as the Somali Ministry of Energy and Water Resources was engaged in a long-term water sector planning process, resulting in a window of opportunity for IWRM implementation efforts to be accelerated. Government actors, academia, the private sector, and civil society participated in the seminars, with special attention given to ensuring good participation of both men and women. The results of the seminars include: stakeholders have an improved understanding of the water-linked conditions that shape Somalia and its future; individual and institutional capacity in water-related development issues is enhanced; and personal relationships between staff at different ministries and water-related actors was improved. The seminar materials brought together Somali and international expertise, under the “training of trainers” modality, ensuring the sustainability of the capacity development efforts.
