Thames21’s goal in the non- tidal Thames area is to instigate, develop, and manage a programme of community engagement and environmental enhancement activities. It also seeks to provide a resource of local volunteers, at key locations along the Non-Tidal Thames area upstream of Teddington Lock. This project is funded until 2015 by the Environment Agency and the RBC Blue Water Project. After running a practical pilot of activities in order to shape effective long term action, hand-in-hand with those living and working around the river in 2011; we are now continuing to work with, and for, the community ties and volunteer resources created, and develop key sites further for 2012 through a wide range of activities. These activities include habitat restoration and creation, invasive species control, nature walks, fun days, discovery days for schools and youth groups, water sampling, tree planting, and litter picking. We work alongside local community groups, authorities, and stakeholders.

Project Results

More than 1000 people have volunteered on the Non-Tidal River Thames since the project began. Over 1000 black bags of unrecyclable rubbish has been removed from the River Thames and surrounding environment. Over 20 educational events have been run from the begging of the project.
