Bantargebang is the biggest landfill in Indonesia covering 120 hectares in area. Servicing five provinces of Indonesias most populous city, the landfill accepts about 5000 tonnes of unsorted waste each day. The project is to improve sanitary standards, and equipped the site with a landfill-gas capture system with flaring and power plant. This is a particularly challenging project as the site is the source of livelihood for about 1,500 waste-pickers and its dependents. Any improvement on this site represents a significant social challenge. The Project introduces various measures that lead to better quality of life to the surrounding neighborhood, and addresses areas, which previously were source of conflicts.Part of the overall project plan is to establish a market economy through development of plastic pelletizing industry within the project vicinity. A new factory commenced operation in Dec 2012. This facility aims to provide additional demand for plastic collected in the landfill by the existing waste pickers, increasing their income, while at the same time reduces the final volume of waste that ends up in the landfill, creating a co-benefit environment. Social and Sustainability BenefitsThis project is strongly contributing to sustainable development: Reduction in emission of Greenhouse GasesProvides clean water wells for the waste picking community living on the landfill perimeter Reduces unpleasant odours and poor sanitary conditionsReduces breading grounds for rodents and fliesIncrease waste recycling
