The main objective to make sure that there is sustainable water supply from River Rwizi On top of that, the quality of the water should be improved The catchment areas around River Rwizi are to be protected The areas that have been degraded by farming and other activities have to be restored To achieve the above, we should be able to involve the people staying around the catchment areas and wetland – we need to involve them to create awareness about sustainability We have thought of alternative income generating activities for the people who have relocated from the wetlands – We plan to introduce bee keeping, tree planting and digging boreholes for them so that they don’t encroach on the wetland. Main Goal The main goal is to achieve a sustainable water supply and generate clean water Activities as above We are in the stage of developing a catchment management plan by December 2014, to execute our activities such planting trees. We are working with the local government to implement these activities through the community leaders. We are involved in the Private Partnering Programme (PPP) for the involvement of the private sector. We have proposals from GIZ to join the PPP and make contributions to preserve river Rwizi

Project Results

One of the achievements is that Nyakambu Wetland was completely degraded. However with our involvement, the vegetation has been restored and there is cleaner water. The impact is that there was relocation of farmers and the wetland was fully restored back. There is a plan for the catchment committee to construct a dam to regulate the release of water during dry season to maintain the river flow.
