Project Overview

The need for improved farming techniques among smallholder farmers has been aggravated by the growing world population and changing climatic conditions. This is especially true in Sub-Saharan Africa where agriculture is the main economic activity in many countries and most of the food is produced by smallholder farmers. The need for improved farming techniques among smallholder farmers has been aggravated by the growing world population and changing climatic conditions. This is especially true in Sub-Saharan Africa where agriculture is the main economic activity in many countries and most of the food is produced by smallholder farmers. The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation (TCCAF), through its Replenish Africa Initiative (RAIN), is supporting the extension of CARE's Pathways program, which was originally funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Pathways aims to improve productivity for smallholder women farmers and advance gender equity in agricultural systems. To date, Pathways has directly engaged more than 40,000 women smallholder farmers in 6 countries, providing training and mentorship on improved agricultural practices, key agricultural value chains, as well as access and use of agricultural inputs. RAIN is helping to advance Pathways' impact by working with CARE to integrate WaSA into the Pathways program in Ghana, Malawi and Mali. Through this project, RAIN and CARE are adding a module on WaSA into the training conducted at Pathwaysestablished Farmer Field and Business Schools. Strengthening the capacity of women smallholder farmers to increase productivity in the context of limited water resources is fundamental to sustaining increases in production, and protecting women smallholder farmers' livelihoods and food security. The term ÒWater Smart AgricultureÓ (WaSA) was coined by CARE during action research undertaken from 2013 to 2015 as part of the Global Water Initiative in Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Uganda. WaSA techniques are soil-smart, rainfall-smart, and (if applicable) irrigation-smart.
