Human activity in the Guerbes-Sanhadja wetland complex has steadily led to environmental degradation over the years, to the point where 42% of the area is now affected. This area is vital to the wellbeing of the local people and species as it provides flood protection, erosion control, and carbon sequestration. The area is also vital because it provides the main sources of food for the surrounding communities. By rebuilding the wetland complex and educating the local population, this area will be able to continue serving the many people and species that rely on its ecosystem. This project will restore a 60-hectare area of the dune cordon in the Guerbes-Sanhadja wetland complex that has been denuded by human activity. This will be implemented in partnership with the General Forest Authority (DGF), which is responsible for classifying and managing protected areas at the national level. Additionally, the project will economically empower rural women and youth, through an agricultural component that focuses on responsible water use in the prickly pear value chain. This activity will consist of training and empowering women around the prickly pear cactus value chain, utilizing water-smart agriculture and processing methodologies. With the help of this project, over 19 million Litres of water will be returned to the Guerbes-Sanhadja wetland complex.
