The Coca-Cola Company and WWF partnered up with a local growers' association in South Africato to create Project Khula, a mentorship program between the commercial sugercane growers and previously disadvantaged smallholder farmers. Smallholder farmers are helped to establish cooperatives and improve farm layouts and management practices, implementing appropriate contours for proper erosion control and drainage, sustainable practices such as maintaining and restoring riparian areas, eliminate the need for pre-harvest and postharvest burning, and adopt integrated pest management systems. These improved practices are expected to more than double yields and incomes for participating smallholder farmers. The project achieved the establishment of two new cooperatives, engaging 97 farmers on 100 hectares of land.
