Coca-Cola West provided funding to the Aso Grassland Restoration Committee to support grassland management of 300 hectares of the Aso grassland to protect source water and preserve biodiversity. This expansive grassland landscape has been maintained by human interventions (grass harvesting, cattle ranching, burning, and others), protecting it from invasive species and ensuring ecologically rich habitats for diverse plants and animals. However, over the past 40 years, the grassland has decreased from approximately 50,000 hectares to 22,000 hectares. Its maintenance has become increasingly challenging due to social and economic changes such as changes in farming and lifestyles, livestock industry depression, aging, and few successors in the farming populations. Coca-Cola West's funding supported the development of a preservation plan, certification of the current grassland condition, and execution of the conservation initiative, ÒSustainable grassland utilization, and maintenance: traditional cattle grazing. This initiative helps sustain local grassland users to continue traditional cattle grazing and maintains grasslands to reduce runoff and increase groundwater infiltration.
