Coca-Cola worked with the US Forest Service to remove drain tails from the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. Drain tiles had been installed here to drain the wetlands for agricultural use. The Prairie had an extensive drain tile system, pervasive invasive species and very little native vegetation. The project removed 11,085 feet of agricultural tile drain, disabled an additional 623 feet of tile drain, treated and removed aggressive trees and woody vegetation from 22 acres, treated 26 acres for invasive species, intensively planted 79 acres with native wetland and prairie plants, and installed additional plants on the remaining 147 acres. This project is expected to result in an expansion of wetlands throughout the area, an increase in groundwater infiltration, an improvement in the quality of water returned to the creek, and will support rare species.
