Project Overview

This project, a collaboration between TCCC and TNC, conserved 242.53 hectares of forest in the Greater Tarcoles River watershed, home to 60% of the population of Costa Rica. Existing forest patches in the watershed are threatened by economic practices like cattle ranching, agriculture, and new residential districts. This would alter the hydrologic function and increase erosion and sedimentation processes in the watershed. The project consisted of 3 approaches: (1) Forest pro…

The project consisted of 3 approaches: (1) Forest protection on 214.7 hectares through conservation agreements and payments to the owners for five years. Whether agreements are renewed depends on funding availability. (2) Natural regeneration of pasture land to forest cover 25.83 hectares through conservation agreements with owners for five years to keep cattle off the land to allow the area to regenerate naturally. (3) Reforestation of 2 hectares with approximately 1,200 trees
