This project focuses on protecting and restoring forested areas and associated ecosystem services, including water supply, of the Haina-Duey subwatershed within the mid Haina del Norte basin, San Cristobal province. This subwatershed is a major source of drinking water for the Santo Domingo municipal water system yet the forested areas in the subwatershed are becoming impacted by agricultural practices. The project consists of four parts: (1) Restoration of previously forested lands that had become degraded due to subsistence farming practices involving deforestation and burning. Restoration will take place in an area owned by 12 landowners totaling 33 hectares. Trees are planted simulating the original vegetation in structure and function alongside productive perennial crops that can generate income to producers. (2) Protection of areas that currently maintain at least 70% of forest cover from deforestation, prioritizing riverine riparian forests, via conservation agreements with 7 land owners of 68.81 hectares of land. These conservation agreements prohibit forest conversion and timber extraction. (3) Assisted restoration through silvopasture, a system that integrates forage production, livestock grazing, and forestry on the land management unit and that promotes better hydrologic condition. This will be done in areas where pasture lands is degraded and with little soil cover due to overgrazing. (4) Riparian Forest Restoration in areas of abandoned agricultural land and degraded forests.
