Project Overview

This project protects 156.86 hectares of native forest remnants in the Greater Tarcoles River watershed, home to 60% of the population of Costa Rica. The areas supplying water for the San Jose metropolitan area are primarily agricultural and threatened by suburban development. If these native forest remnants were not protected by the project, they would likely be converted to agricultural production. Overgrazing, combined with the high slopes, will lead to increased erosion …

Overgrazing, combined with the high slopes, will lead to increased erosion and worsening hydrologic conditions. The intervention is spread among several project sites, in inland and riverine riparian forest areas, including cloud forests. All of the properties in the intervention are located in the upper areas of watersheds that directly contribute flow to rural and suburban aqueducts. Conservation agreements have been signed with the landowners, and physical barriers have been installed to exclude cattle from the forest areas.
