WaterAid is an international NGO focused exclusively on ensuring equitable access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education (WASH) for the world’s poorest communities. Formed in 1981 we have been working in water, sanitation and hygiene for over 30 years. To date we have reached 17.5 million people with safe water and 12.9 million people with improved sanitation. WaterAid works in 27 countries globally, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Central America. Each country operates a national WaterAid Country Programme. These are supported by our offices in the UK, USA, Sweden and Australia. WaterAid has been working in Bangladesh since 1986. WaterAid Bangladesh is headquartered in Dhaka. Since forming we have reached 2,860,000 people with safe water and 7,690,000 people with sanitation. As with all WaterAid programmes our approach in Bangladesh combines service delivery work – physically providing access to WASH – with advocacy work – mobilising support for national policies that advance the rights of poor people living without water and sanitation services. Broadly speaking our work in Bangladesh can be divided into five thematic focus areas: 1) Rural WASH - Water and sanitation services to rural communities. 2) Urban WASH - helping poor communities living in the slums of Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi, Barisal, Sylhet, Bogra and Rangpur. 3) Peri-Urban and Small Town WASH - introducing effective WASH service delivery to low-income communities and disadvantaged groups living without adequate access in small towns and peri-urban areas. 4) Equity and Inclusion - increasing access to safe water and sanitation for four targeted marginalized groups: sex workers, ethnic minorities, manual scavengers and tea-estate workers. 5) Climate Change – introducing appropriate, resilient water and sanitation technologies to communities living in climate vulnerable area. WaterAid Bangladesh currently manage 63 projects across 25 districts: Bandarban, Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Dhaka, Jamalpur, Khulna, Kurigram, Mehepur, Mymensingh, Naogaon, Narail, Narayongang, Narshingdi, Nilphamari, Pabna, Rajshahi, Rangamati, Rangpur, Satkhira, Shariapur, Sherpur, Sirajgani, Sylhet, Tangali and Thakurgaon. WaterAid Bangladesh partners include local NGOs, institutions, national governments, service providers and private sector actors.
