The Benton County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) was established in 1945, to serve the area of Benton County, IA. Benton SWCD is governed by five elected commissioners, each located in a different township within the district area. Benton SWCD promotes protection, maintenance, and improvement of soil and water resources within the district. Working with other agencies, the Benton SWCD provides technical assistance for planning, designing, and implementing soil conservation practices, as specified by Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) guidelines. The agency also administers federal and state cost-share funds to help landowners implement conservation practices. Benton SWCD works on special projects, such as the Benton/Tama Nutrient Reduction Demonstration Project, to educate the general public about soil and water resources.
