American Rivers is championing a national effort to protect and restore all rivers, from remote mountain
streams to urban waterways. Healthy rivers provide people and nature with clean, abundant water and
natural habitat. For 50 years, American Rivers staff, supporters, and partners have shared a common
belief: Life Depends on Rivers.

Rivers in the United States and around the world face unprecedented threats from pollution, dams, and increasing droughts and floods. These destroy river habitat that supports thousands of species and harm our health, too, putting clean drinking water at risk.

American Rivers tackles these challenges head on. We have a half-century of experience addressing river threats from coast-to-coast: helping partners protect vital habitat, working with communities to reduce river pollution, securing policies to ensure we all have clean, abundant water, driving solutions that reduce the risk of floods, working to remove unnecessary dams, and strengthening a river movement that adds power to all this work. We’ve catalyzed the protection of more U.S. rivers and the removal of more dams than any other river organization.

As the threats intensify, and American Rivers is responding boldly: In the next decade, we will:

Protect 1 million miles of rivers.

Remove 30,000 dams to bring damaged rivers back from the brink

Mobelize a bold river movement to drive change that makes rivers healthier and water cleaner.
