Organization Overview

Our mission is to develop and demonstrate affordable, economically viable solutions, to share sector knowledge, and to build partnerships that reach millions in underserved communities.

Safe Water Network is a non-profit organization working to advance the scale and impact of decentralized market-based safe water solutions for low-income populations in emerging economies. Safe Water Network combines capabilities from the public and private sectors to address the challenges of water supply, in particular: i) unsafe water; ii) unreliable water services; and iii) community water approaches that performance sub-optimally and/or fail to reach national scale. We apply our core competencies to solve these problems.

Since 2006, Safe Water Network has provided expertise to governments, partners, and local communities in Ghana and India, as well as globally, to demonstrate successful small water enterprise (SWE) approaches that are adaptable and replicable in rural, small town, and peri-urban communities; overcome the barriers to operational sustainability; and create the necessary conditions for scale. To date, we have implemented ~450 water systems, providing safe water access for 1.6M+ people; this includes nearly 100 SWEs in Ghana, reaching over 120 communities and 440,000 people.

Building on our experience in the field, we use our operating portfolio to test and validate innovative technologies and strategies to optimize the operational, financial and consumer performance of safe water delivery systems, while ensuring safety, affordability, convenient access, and consumer benefits in terms of health, productivity, and well-being. We use results to develop and share clear and compelling evidence and knowledge through branded publication and event series, as well as establish best practices and performance standards to ensure new and existing decentralized water systems are delivering professional high quality services. Finally, we work through national alliances and stakeholder convenings to strengthen enabling and financing environments by overcoming regulatory and policy barriers, and mobilizing public funding to support scale up; and catalyze sector collaboration by coordinating with our peers to advocate for SWEs with a unified voice and build global standards.
