The Lower Flint River Basin is one of the most ecologically diverse river systems in Georgia. People, plants and animals depend on its waters, yet recent flows have reached historic low levels. This is also one of the most agriculturally intensive regions in the state, producing more than $2 billion in farm-based revenue annually. The Lower Flint River Basin is one of the most ecologically diverse river systems in Georgia. People, plants and animals depend on its waters, yet recent flows have reached historic low levels. This is also one of the most agriculturally intensive regions in the state, producing more than $2 billion in farm-based revenue annually. Irrigation is critical to production, with approximately 1.25 billion gallons of water applied daily at peak irrigation in drought years. To protect this vital resource, The Nature Conservancy is partnering with Georgia EPD, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the University of Georgia and the Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District (the District), a collaboration of regulators, research partners and local farmers, to develop and deploy innovative agricultural water conservation technology and develop a model easement program designed to target areas for maximum groundwater recharge.
