Seasonal variations of temperature and river flow rate could potentially limit water intake needed by the Limerick plant. To address these limitations, Exelon collaborated with numerous regulatory agencies and environmental stakeholders to develop a flow augmentation alternative that allows mine water to be used to supplement flow in the Schuylkill River, allowing the plant to continue to use the Schuylkill rather than the Delaware River as its primary source for non-contact cooling water. This project has demonstrated that mine water can be a viable option. It has been made part of the facility’s water use docket with the Delaware River Basin Commission.
