The Kelani River is the home for more than 25% of Sri Lankans. It provides drinking water for more than 6 million people in Colombo and suburbs. The river receives pollution from industries, agriculture and households such as fertilizer residues, eroded sediments, bacteria from toilets, discarded plastic, municipal waste, metals from industry or households etc. Pollution prevention and safeguarding this valuable water source will significantly enhance our health, life quality including those of our future generations. KVPI is expected to bring plantation communities, villages, scientists, trainers, Government officials and like-minded entities to a single platform to conserve, manage and monitor the WeOya catchment area. The KVPI is founded as a joint KVPL and IUCN supported “Public, Private and People Partnership.” The overarching objective of KVPI is to improve the collaboration of private sector and Government entities towards adopting Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for greening the river basin to improve water safety while emphasising on soil erosion, plastic and other waste management, reducing chemical foot prints, citizen science and Management effectiveness tools to make the WeOya catchment pollution free. The specific objectives are to: 1. Adopt Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for greening the Weoya catchment, its ecosystem and ecosystem services 2. Design and support Kelani Valley Plantation PLC to demonstrate a replicable Public, Private, People Partnership for catchment protection to support Surakimu Ganga Programme 3. Ensure continuous Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) approach to pilot
