The project objectives were to support the establishment of small-scale irrigation on 10 ha and the adoption of improved cookstoves for 2000 households complemented by capacity building for both community and APEFA staff, now the project progress is at 81.6 %

One of the key activities undertaken was the implementation of a solar-powered small-scale irrigation scheme. This initiative targeted 10 hectares of agricultural land, benefiting 300 farmers. The project successfully installed an irrigation system, ensuring improved access to water for irrigation purposes. Additionally, farmers were provided with essential training on system maintenance to ensure its efficient operation. Furthermore, the project focused on capacity building among the farmers, particularly in credit and savings skills. This was accomplished through the creation of village saving and lending groups, enabling the farmers to develop financial resilience.

In parallel, the project also aimed to support the adoption of improved cook stoves (ICS) within the community. APEFA Rwanda supplied equipment for the manufacturing of these stoves and trained 33 youth in cookstove production techniques. As a result, the project successfully manufactured and distributed 1,006 improved cook stoves to vulnerable communities. This initiative not only reduced the reliance on traditional cooking methods but also had significant environmental and health benefits. The improved cook stoves promoted fuel efficiency, affordability, and reduced environmental impact. Moreover, they led to improved indoor air quality, addressing the health concerns associated with traditional cooking practices.

In addition to the project implementation activities, A comprehensive training program was organized to enhance the staff's skills and knowledge in several key areas. The training focused on increasing participants' understanding of the concepts used in designing Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Frameworks and Plans. It aimed to equip the staff with the necessary skills to design effective M&E plans for future projects. By enhancing their competence in this area, the staff would be better equipped to track and evaluate project progress and outcomes, ensuring the successful implementation of APEFA's initiatives.

Furthermore, the training aimed to introduce the staff to the requirements and approaches to fundraising for NGOs. This component provided valuable insights into the strategies and techniques involved in securing funding for sustainable project implementation. By familiarizing the staff with fundraising practices, they would be better prepared to identify funding opportunities, cultivate donor relationships, and effectively communicate the organization's mission and impact.

Overall, the project's achievements have been remarkable. It has successfully enhanced climate change resilience in the Bugesera district by implementing the solar-powered irrigation scheme and promoting sustainable cooking practices. The solar-powered irrigation system has increased agricultural productivity, contributing to improved food security for the community. The project has also empowered farmers by equipping them with knowledge and skills in system maintenance and financial management through the village saving and lending groups. Furthermore, the project has created employment opportunities for the youth involved in the manufacturing of improved cookstoves, fostering economic growth and empowerment within the community.
