Under the SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme, with support of UNEP, GWP, UNEP-DHI and UNDP Cap-Net, Guatemala developed an IWRM Action Plan in 2018-2019. Out of this Action Plan, the action 'Identification and Strengthening of Watershed Technical Committees' was chosen as the focus for the Funding Matchmaking Initiative. This Initiative, which also piloted in Kenya, aimed to match country-defined priorities for water management improvements which are lacking financing or only have partial funding, to local funding sources, donors, and other funding agencies. The focus was determined by the Vice-Ministry of Water (VMA) at the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) with the support of GWP Central America (GWP-CAM).

The action had the intention of bridging the funding gap and generate financing between private sector actors, public sector, and international cooperation in La Pasión river basin. The main results include the identification of local financing opportunities and the development of the funding concept for the Spanish Agency for International Development (AECID) to establish a technical watershed committee for the river basin, as well as the exchange of experiences and the preparation of guidelines that can facilitate the replication of the initiative in other basins, as well as strengthening the technical capacities of the Ministry of Environment. The updated proposal is currently being reviewed by AECID. The next steps are to organise meetings between the government and the private sector and national and international donors to present the proposed initiative.
