The International Water Stewardship Programme (IWaSP) seeks to initiate multi-stakeholder partnerships with the private sector, the public sector and the civil society in order to formulate and implement measures to improve water security for all parties. In order to improve the water management in Grenada, IWaSP has initiated two key partnerships.

To improve the management of the Grand Etang Lake as a water reservoir for southern Grenada’s drinking water supply Grand Etang Forest Reserve, IWaSP served as a moderator between NAWASA, individual hotels and three different Ministries relevant for the management of Grand Etang Lake. The transparent communication lead to improved information sharing and a new dynamic for the improvement of tourism facilities.

IWaSP also convened the Grand Anse Watershed Partnership to decrease the impacts of the frequent flooding after heavy rainfall events in the Grand Anse Beach region by implementing a sustainable drainage and water management system in this area.

Project Results

As of January 2017, the Grand Etang Lake partnership was at the transition between the assessment and commitment phases, and was facilitating ideas about the lake’s development (in particular for tourism purposes) and how they can be linked with water resources protection. The IWaSP team gained trust as a trustworthy and competent partner for this process, and has been engaged to bring in the water resources management expertise from the highest levels, including Grenada’s Prime Minister.

For the Grand Anse Watershed partnership, IWaSP was able to appeal to the interests of a few stakeholders in the area who were determined to begin without having to wait until all stakeholders were convened. This was made possible through the staged approach of the partnership, with a focus on quick win measures at the beginning (while still able to act as stand-alone examples for improved water and drainage management in a catchment area). These initial steps are expected to help attract other stakeholders and, hence, additionally required resources for the second, more comprehensive stage.
