The International Water Stewardship Programme (IWaSP) seeks to initiate multi-stakeholder partnerships with the private sector, the public sector and the civil society in order to formulate and implement measures to improve water security for all parties. The coastal city Port Elizabeth is constantly growing and therefore needs more water. A partnership with private entities (Santam, DWS) and civil society organizations (Commonland, Living Land) aims at mitigating the water risks in the Port Elizabeth catchment. Therefore different measures are currently implemented: landscape restoration, creation of alternative business models for small farmers, capacity-building in municipalities to deal with disaster management & become climate resilient. The aim is to create a large project with many private-sector partners to significantly improve the water security for Port Elizabeth and surrounds.

Project Results

Expected outcomes are: 1.Documentation of lessons learned concerning risk assessment; 2.Capacity building in the PE municipality for resilience thinking; 3.Landscape restoration 4.Job creation
