In 2011, Terry Teach of Grundfos Americas carried a bucket of waterfor three miles to raise funds and awareness for the very first time. The Walk for Water fundraising event took place in Charleston,South Carolina. It was meant to be a reminder of the millions ofpeople who undertake a similar journey each and every day.Not long after, Terry suggested making Walk for Water a Grundfos widebut locally-driven event and the idea spread from there. In 2019, three Walk for Water events were hosted in the U.S. (Illinois,Kansas, and Houston), as well as in Dubai, South Africa, andDenmark.Walk for Water has become very important to people in the GrundfosIllinois office. Its hard to fathom the fact that one-third of the worldstill lacks access to clean, safe water, says Alyssa Phelps, ServiceProgramme leader at Grundfos Americas. She continues, The YCCoffice is happy and proud to donate our time to help others.Speaking to broad support for the event, she adds, We have agreat mix of leaders from Service, Sales, and Operations. The unionparticipates as well, which encourages even more employees to getinvolved. And this year, we even had several vendor sponsors. The Houston office hosted their second Walk for Water this year, andBetty Nguyen, Associate HR Recruiter, joins Alyssa in her enthusiasm. Many of our employees have had several experiences withhurricanes and inclement weather, says Nguyen. We definitelyunderstand the importance of access to clean water, and are morethan happy to do our part.In the hot, dry emirate of Dubai, they also walked the threekilometreroute, and Kostas Poulopoulos, Gulf Area ManagingDirector, was happy to see so many colleagues participate.I believe that truly solving water scarcity is a challenge that eachand every one of us needs to take part in, says Poulopoulos. Weneed to start with ourselves, with our employees, their families, andfriends, encouraging them to recognize the problem and to startconserving precious water.District Sales Manager for Grundfos Canada, Ammar Harastani, wasparticularly moved by participating in the event. I was broughtup in Jordan a country with scarce drinking water resources, heexplains. As a child, I witnessed first-hand how communities like the onemy own family lived in, conserved water as the city supplied it onlyone day each week. Harastani continues, Living in Canada hasbeen a real eye-opener for me. Here we have one of the largestfreshwater resources in the world. As humans, we often take thetruly important things for granted.Employees at Grundfos NorthAmerica raised DKK 734,500 through Walk for Water eventsheld at various locations in 2018. During 2019, the generous donation funded the installation of awater tower, off-grid solar inverter, and pump that will providereliable and safe water to Mvumi Hospital in Tanzania, the only medical facility serving the 400,000people living in the rural Dodoma district of Tanzania, and it hasno onsite well. The project was executed in partnership with the NGO,Water Mission.
