In 2019, we expanded our engagement to the water-scarce Sabie & Crocodile catchment area in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa Ð an area which is strategically important for sourcing our citrus fruit and nuts. At the end of June 2019, we completed the first workshop with participants from various sectors such as government, NGOs, private sector and farming organizations in Mpumalanga. In the workshop, it was identified that water availability and quality, in particular, as a result of high levels of Escherichia coli, are both major risks in the region. Woolworths, in conjunction with WWF-SA, commissioned a study into the economic impact of water quality (specifically the impact of Escherichia coli in the Woolworths supply chain in this area).
