Stretching from the Allegheny Mountains across to the Rockies and south to the Gulf of Mexico, the Mississippi River Basin cradles an astounding 1.245 million square miles in 31 states and 2 Canadian provincesÑforming the worldÕs fourth largest river basin. The flowing waters of the mighty Mississippi abound with purpose, proving indispensable to our way of life. The river quenches our thirst, nourishes our crops, energizes our homes, and transports the goods we create. Funneling fresh water into the Gulf of Mexico, the Mississippi sustains robust fisheries, which provide food, jobs, and economic security to millions of people. Each year, heavy rains and melting snows wash massive amounts of nutrientsÑmostly nitrogen and phosphorousÑfrom farms, cities, and other sources into the Mississippi River Basin. The nutrients flow downstream to the Gulf of Mexico, posing health hazards to the people and wildlife that rely on the Mississippi, as well as considerable economic risk to the communities along the way. We have a unique opportunity to restore AmericaÕs river to health, a healing that will reverberate throughout the communities that rely on the river and Gulf for generations to come. Collective action Collaborate with stakeholders to improve regional water policy and catchment governance and address shared water challenges within our communities and across our value chain.
