The first urban floodplain in Spain has been recognized by the #PorElClima Community as a pioneering nature-based solution to solve flood problems in large cities SUEZ in Spain has presented, within the framework of the COP25 that will be held in Madrid until next December 13, the La Marjal Park, a pioneering infrastructure throughout Spain capable of collecting up to 45 million liters of rainwater. La Marjal Park, located in an area of __urbanizations in Playa de San Juan, in Alicante, is an example of urban green infrastructure since it combines urban resilience and biodiversity. It is no coincidence that the park shares its name with the marshes, typical wetlands of the Mediterranean region that, in addition to cushioning the effects of floods, also serve as a refuge for species of vegetation and birdlife in the region. This floodplain park has been selected, at COP25, as one of the 101 Spanish business examples of #PorElClima actions, as it is considered an efficiency model in the fight against the consequences of climate change in cities. According to Amelia Navarro, Director of Sustainable Development in Aguas de Alicante (SUEZ Group), La Marjal "is a green infrastructure that fulfills a triple function: hydraulic, as a temporary accumulation area for a volume of 45,000m 3 of rainwater; social, as a municipal park for the use of citizens, and, finally, environmental, as a green lung for the city that favors biodiversity. " On August 21, the park reached its maximum storage data to date, 22,000m 3, almost half of its maximum capacity. This multifunctional green space, was built in 2015 thanks to the collaboration between the Alicante City Council and Aguas de Alicante, has 3.6 hectares of surface with capacity to collect up to 45,000 m 3 of water, and two collectors (located in the avenues with a tendency to flood) that collect the water from the floods and channel it to the two ponds of the park. Subsequently, the water is taken to the Monte Orgegia wastewater treatment plant for reuse for urban irrigation purposes mainly, thanks to the city's more than 70 km of reclaimed water networks. It is not the first recognition that the project receives. This year, it has also been highlighted by ForŽtica in the Climate Change Toolbox as an example of a business solution to improve climate action in cities. In 2018, Alicante received the ÒSustainable CityÓ Award from the 'Forum Ambiental' Foundation and Ecomed in the Integral Water Cycle category for the candidacy ÒSustainable Management of the La Marjal Flood Urban ParkÓ.
