Lakes have historically been a critical part of a citiesÕ ability to buffer from droughts and floods. BangaloreÕs lakes are now in trouble due to rapid urbanisation and lack of proper underground drainage system, inadequate treatment in sewage treatment plants and outright encroachment. This has had an impact on local biodiversity, sedimentation, and even contamination of groundwater. Bangalore also has an active citizen lakes community. Yet despite years of research, both the government agencies and the citizens are ill-equipped to handle the management of these lakes as information is neither consolidated nor made usable to facilitate easy and informed decision making. Moreover, with various stakeholders and government departments having different responsibilities, there is no common platform to bring data and information from all these sources together.
Basin and/or Contextual Conditions: PHYSICAL: Water scarcity or drought
Project Benefits: Long-term partnership(s) created
Indirect or Direct Beneficiaries: Water utilities
Months & Implementing: More than 3 years
Primary Funding Source: Pool funding (i.e., joint funding of several partners)
Challenges: RESOURCES: Lack of financial resources

Project Narrative

¥ Analyze BrightstormÕs existing asset base across entire Mississippi Basin for best ROI on stated key and co-benefits outlined below ¥ Document analysis and share methodology on web-based platform ¥ On projects that have highest ROI for basin-level water quality/quantity benefits, retrofit at least 3-5 ponds within the Mississippi basin. Retrofits will include the following tasks: o Site survey/Verification of Existing Condition o Soil Review o Design of outfall retrofit, including hydraulic modeling and routing to set up software-based control (Opti) o Design of infiltration layout (Parjana) o Installation of enhanced groundwater recharge product for infiltration enhancement (Parjana) o Permitting of outfall retrofit o Construction of outfall retrofit o Commissioning and Optimization of the Control Logic o Operate/Run software to control pond outflows. Monitor pond performance prior to Parjana retrofit; generate performance data on recharge volumes post-Parjana installation. o Document and report real-time metrics during monitoring period.
