The primary source of water for the city of Bucaramanga, Colombia, is the Surata River, which originates in the Santurban High Andean Wetland. Approximately two million people depend on this fragile ecosystem, which is being affected by agricultural practices, formal and informal mining, deforestation and rising global temperatures, resulting in water availability and quality challenges. In Colombia we are a founding partner of the Alianza BioCuenca, the water fund for Norte de Santander, where 70% of the Santurban High Andean Wetland is located. Through our Bavaria Foundation, in 2018 we established the MiParamo watershed protection project, which is focused on forest conservation, ecosystem restoration, environmental technical training in communities, sustainable agricultural practices and watershed monitoring. MiParamo is operated by Alianza BioCuenca and funded in part by proceeds from the sale of Zalva, a water brand we launched in Colombia in 2019 with the express purpose of engaging our consumers in our work protecting the High Andean Wetlands. Since the start of the MiParamo project, it has preserved or restored more than 5,200 hectares, planted more than 260,000 trees, provided sustainable agriculture support for more than 800 hectares and benefited more than 1,200 local families.
