Project Overview

The goal of the Yampa River Fund is to establish a sustainable, voluntary funding source for the Yampa River in order to:
• Enhance water security for communities, agriculture, the economy, and the natural environment in the Yampa Valley;
• Support a healthy, flowing river and enhance critical low flows through water leases from reservoirs, and;
• Maintain or improve river function through a holistic approach to the restoration of riparian and/or in-channel habitat.

Missed Opportunities

The YRF has only been operating for about 7 months. It is in the porcess of awarding its first grants. So far it is operating successfully. A Montiroing and Evaluation Plan nor a Strategic Plan were not completed prior to the launch of the YRF so we are working to implement those plans by the end of 2020. Fortunately, the YRF budget has funding aside to help complete those items.

Project Narrative

The YRF was in development for over two years prior to launching in September of 2019. Work to build the coalition and develop the Collaboration Agreement that governs the Fund's activities was crucial in its initial success. The Board of the YRF reperesents the basin-wide coalition ensuring that there is representation from a wide geographic area and from numerous interests including towns, counties, business, utlities and NGOs. TNC is serving as the management entity and has a half time position managing the Fund currently. The Fund will transition to local manageing entity by the beginning of 2022.
