Community Overview

Coronavirus disease 2019 (or COVID-19) is an infectious respiratory disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic in March of 2020 due to the disease’s global spread. Public health agencies — including the WHO and the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) — have urged the public to maintain physical distance from one another and to practice frequent handwashing.

Because handwashing is an important way to reduce transmission, the response to COVID-19 intersects with issues around global access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). This community page on the Water Action Hub seeks to highlight the connections between COVID-19 response and WASH issues, as well as other connections between COVID-19 and water, climate, and equity challenges.
