Through its partnership with Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma Heineken, Restauremos El Colorado is developing a campaign to expand acquisitions water rights for instream flows in the delta while raising awareness and catalyzing action and increased support for river flows permanently secured for the delta ecosystem.

Working closely and in coordination with the National Water Commission-CONAGUA, the irrigation district authorities and the Mexicali Valley irrigation modules, Restauremos is carrying out the legal and operational protocols that are necessary for the permanent transfer and delivery of water rights that we are securing thanks to the support of Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma Heineken to this project.

• Management, programming and delivery of volumes. Once the rights have been registered, the planning and programming of the delivery of volumes to the main channel of the Colorado River begins. This programming process is done under the regulations established in the Irrigation District, in coordination with the different levels of water management in the Valley of Mexicali

• Protection and restoration of key sites in the river. The delivery of water volume equivalent to 53 hectares of water rights (530,000 m 3 /yr) is focused on sections of the river groundwater conditions are conducive to restoring instream flows, aquifer recharge and wetlands native to the Colorado River.

• Community involvement in conservation jobs, enjoyment of restored habitats and river flows, when deliveries happen.

• Hydrological monitoring of deliveries and ecological response.

Project Results

The impact of the water rights acquired in the project with Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma Heineken, will allow us to recover the riparian ecosystem and contribute flows along 17 km of the Colorado River in Mexico in the area with the greatest restoration potential (seemap). In addition to the restoration of river flows and the restoration of critical habitats for endemic and protected species in both countries, communities along this section river will also benefit from the restoration of river flows
