The primary means of managing this risk is to reduce our operation’s consumption and reliance on potable water sources. The mine runs a zero-discharge, closed loop water system whereby all water is recycled. Potable water is used for human consumption and top up. In Financial Year 2016 86% of water at Zondereinde Mine was recycled. This is an ongoing strategy and embedded into the operational design at Zondereinde and Booysendal, thus associated costs are difficult to isolate. We have invested in the development of a pipeline from Magalies Water to Zondereinde Mine, with the objective of reducing the mine’s vulnerability to interruptions in supply from Magalies Water.

Project Results

Reduced consumption and reliance on potable water sources. Recycled 86% of water at Zondereinde Mine in FY 2016.
