The Nature Conservancy is working with the Jicarilla Apache Nation and the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission (NMISC) to help resolve water scarcity in the Colorado River Basin through a water sharing agreement. This agreement will enhance the Jicarilla Apache Nation’s economic and social resilience, generate ecological benefits for the San Juan and Colorado Rivers, and increase water security. This innovative agreement between a sovereign Tribal Nation, the NMISC, and a conservation organization will allow the NMISC to lease up to 20,000 acre-feet (24,669,600 cubic meters) of water per year.
