"Water from Monarchs" is a strategic soil and forest restoration initiative led by Nación Verde in collaboration with Procter & Gamble, aiming to replenish water to the Cutzamala System, which supplies 40% of the Valley of Mexico’s water. Focused on 409 hectares within Michoacán’s Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve and surrounding regions, the project tackles extreme drought and ecosystem degradation by improving rainwater infiltration and forest health. The program integrates three core interventions: soil conservation practices (contours, trenches, and terraces), livestock exclusion via fencing, and the planting of 20,000 native trees such as *Abies religiosa*—the monarch butterfly’s preferred species. These practices restore degraded land, reduce runoff, and enhance local hydrologic conditions, leading to a replenishment of 1.2 Billion liters of water annually. The project also addresses the social dimension, offering above-average wages to some of Mexico’s most vulnerable indigenous and rural communities. It includes climate-adaptive reforestation to counteract the uphill migration of tree species and prevent "zombie forests" caused by climate change. By linking ecosystem conservation with measurable water outcomes and social equity, "Water from Monarchs" demonstrates a replicable, nature-based solution to water scarcity and climate resilience at the landscape scale.
