BlueGreen Water Technologies successfully remediated the heavily contaminated Setumo Dam in Mahikeng, South Africa, tackling a severe harmful algal bloom (HAB) crisis. The dam, burdened by decades of sewage contamination and excessive carbon buildup, endangered the drinking water supply for approximately 500,000 residents. BlueGreen's intervention utilized its Lake Guard® Oxy solution, a US EPA-registered treatment, to combat the cyanobacterial blooms. Applied via helicopter, the treatment targeted the source of the contamination, restoring the dam's ecological balance. Significant improvements were observed following the application of Lake Guard® Oxy. Cyanobacteria levels notably decreased, and the water quality improved substantially, restoring safe drinking water access. This restoration not only provided clean water but also dramatically enhanced the community's quality of life. Furthermore, the project resulted in the removal and sequestration of an estimated 44,000 tons of CO2, demonstrating the technology's potential for climate change mitigation. The Setumo Dam project, conducted in collaboration with the Department of Water and Sanitation, Sedibeng Water, and Rand Water Analytical Services, highlights BlueGreen's commitment to delivering sustainable, environmentally friendly solutions to challenging water quality issues. It showcases the effectiveness of Lake Guard® Oxy in restoring vital water resources and improving the lives of communities dependent on them.
