Project Overview

At MGM Resorts in Las Vegas, approximately 90% of water withdrawals come from municipal sources and 10% comes from company-owned well water rights. At our Las Vegas Strip Resorts, 76% of water use is non-consumptive use and does not affect permanent supplies. Since a large proportion of our water use is for sources that do not leave the permanent supply, we place a particular emphasis on consumptive water uses which include:

At MGM Resorts in Las Vegas, approximately 90% of water withdrawals come from municipal sources and 10% comes from company-owned well water rights. At our Las Vegas Strip Resorts, 76% of water use is non-consumptive use and does not affect permanent supplies. Since a large proportion of our water use is for sources that do not leave the permanent supply, we place a particular emphasis on consumptive water uses which include:

  • Evaporative cooling in HVAC systems
  • Irrigation in horticulture areas
  • Evaporation from pools and water features

MGM Resorts operates a horticulture water conservation strategy to reduce water usage for irrigation in horticulture areas. The removal of plants and materials that require frequent water and maintenance will be replaced with water-smart and native plants along with introducing artistic sculptures and unique design concepts. Key tactics include:

  • Active weather data and evapotranspiration (ET) monitoring and adjustment
  • Mobile device adjustment of irrigation schedules
  • Multi-user access
  • Flow sensing and monitoring guards against major leaks
  • Conversion to artificial turf

MGM Resorts has collaborated with SYNLawn across various real grass conversion projects. For example, The Bellagio Resort and Casino is home to 4,000 rooms and spans 77 acres. The resort holds high standards for its ambiance due to its popularity. SYNLawn completed five high-profile sections of the resort, including the fountain, grand entry, and porte-cochere. The final installation resulted in 15,000 square feet of made-to-order turf installed.

To date, over 200,000 square feet of real grass have been replaced with water-efficient alternatives. The current and outstanding conversion changes are expected to save an additional 9.4 million gallons of water (100% consumptive use in this area). This includes landscaping changes at our resorts and other facilities, including corporate campuses.
