The objectives and purpose behind installations of pump&drink® solar water pump, treatment and distribution stations for rural communities in Nigeria are multifaceted and aimed at addressing various challenges faced by these communities. Some of the key objectives include:

  1. RURAL DEVELOPMENT SOLUTION: Nigeria has a growing rural population. Nigeria on an average has up to 60% of unfunctional hand pumps. Of which the most recent reports of installed hand pumps were in 2016.
  2. HAND PUMPS REPLACEMENT: This technology and innovation affords better durability, better flow, Treatment and storage of water.
  3. DRINKING WATER NOT JUST WATER: Our installed stations offer water treatment in accordance to WHO standards to guaranteeing an improved health to the community. Pump&drink® stations provide a sustainable and reliable source of water, reducing the burden of collecting water from distant and often contaminated sources. Access to clean water is essential for improving health, reducing waterborne diseases, and enhancing overall well-being.
  4. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: The pump&drink® solar water pump, treatment and distribution stations operate using renewable energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. This promotes sustainable development by harnessing clean energy sources, which are abundant in many African regions, and helps mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.
  5. REDUCED MIGRATION: Lack of access to essential resources like water often drives rural communities to migrate to urban areas in search of better opportunities. By providing access to water through solar-powered pumps, rural communities may experience reduced migration rates, leading to more balanced urban-rural development.

2.4 SCOPE OF WORK

Our designs and installations are grouped into 5 principal components. They are;

  • Raw water pumping tanks connected to solar panels and PSOL Pump,
  • Complete water treatment line to provide drinking water in accordance with WHO regulations,
  • Drinking water storage tank raised 8m from the ground and ramps with average of 5 Taps for the distribution of water,
  • Remote data management. Each station is equipped with a box for transferring data to a centralized office.
  • Solar Lighting for the distribution site.

2.5 VALUE PROPOSITION

1. Remote monitoring through web platforms and mobile apps to receive maintenance alerts, site information, and daily water information for each station.

2. Not just hand pumps, but a whole solution that provides drinking water in accordance to WHO regulations. This aligns with SDG 6, which aims to provide access to clean water and adequate sanitation for all.

3. Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving drinking water in line with UNDP SDG goals.

4. Substantially increase water-use efficiency across rural communities and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.

5. Water treatment guaranteeing an improved health to the community.

6. Support positive economic, social and environmental links between urban, peri-urban and rural areas by strengthening national and regional development planning.

7. Pump&Drink harnesses solar energy to power its pumping mechanism. By relying on renewable energy, the product contributes to Goal 7 of the SDGs, which focuses on affordable and clean energy access. The use of solar power makes the system sustainable, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing its environmental impact.

8. The project design is underpinned on community-based management to enhance overall O&M performance, by adopting appropriate technologies suitable for rural communities.
