Project Overview

The Project will pursue short-term land and water fallowing activities within the Mexicali Valley during 2022 – 2023 to reduce Colorado River water use and enable reduced delivery of water from Lake Mead as a first objective in an overall plan to help Mexicali Valley farmers switch to lower water use/higher value crops and to continue environmental restoration in the Colorado River Delta. By establishing and scaling an approved mechanism for short-term land and water fallowing activities in the Mexicali Valley, the Project lays the groundwork for future efforts that will: a) support the conversion of cropland in the Mexicali Valley to more productive, valuable crops on a smaller irrigated footprint, b) support the installation of water-saving irrigation technologies, and c) assist Mexicali Valley farmers and agricultural communities to thrive in an increasingly water scarce future – while protecting ecological resources in the Colorado River Delta and promoting regional climate resilience. The Project will also demonstrate an innovative use of non-profit revolving funds that can be applied in other contexts throughout the Colorado River Basin.
