The Newtown Creek Alliance is a community-based organization that focuses on the area around one of NYC’s most polluted bodies of water and Superfund site, the Newtown Creek. The group’s offices have a green roof on site to help collect stormwater and prevent sewer overflows into the creek during rain events. They’re using Temboo’s platform with soil moisture sensors to quantify the benefits of green roofs for future green infrastructure development, something which has not been studied extensively before and could pave the way for more green roofs in the area and around NYC. The project will also allow the group to increase volunteer engagement and provide new educational opportunities for residents in the area. The green roof will be a new model for living laboratories and enable them to receive additional grant funding through STEM courses and environmental education initiatives.
